TP Mazembe beat Entente Setif in
four-goal thriller in Lubumbashi to
book their place in the 2013 CAF
Confederation Cup semifinals.
Mazambe beat the visitors 4-2 to
break their three-match winless
jinx against Algerians after their
previous meetings had all ended in
draws.
Tanzanian striker Thomas
Ulimwengu scored a brace with two
first half goals for Mazembe.
Ulimwengu put Mazembe ahead in
the fourth minute with a headed
goal, but that lead was short-lived
when defender Mohamed Ziti
levelled a minute later. Mazembe
restored their lead in the 16th
minute through Tesor Mputu, who
slid through Setif’s backline to slot
the ball past Sofiane Khedairia.
Ulimwengu stretched Mazembe’s
lead in the 27th minute after
finishing off a cross from his
compatriot Mbwana Samatta, who
eluded Abdelghani Demmou to
give the home side a 3-1 halftime
advantage. Mazembe extended
their lead four minutes after the
hour mark through Samatta, who
benefitted from another defensive
blunder by Demmou to gift the
hosts their fourth goal.
Mputu had another great chance
to complete his brace three
minutes later but Khedaria was
alert to foil the danger. Setif’s
consolation goal came in the 71st
minute through striker Kaled
Gourmi, who blasted an
unstoppable volley beyond Robert
Kidiaba. Gourmi almost added a
Setif’s third in the 83rd minute,
but Kidiaba scooped the ball to
deny the striker his second goal of
the day. Mazembe were then
awarded a penalty deep into injury
time of the 90 minutes, but
midfielder Ngasanya Ilongo blasted
the spot kick wide.
The DR Congo side book there
place in the last four with a game
to spare after accruing an 10
points from five games. FUS Rabat,
who host Mazembe in both sides’
final Group B match, could join
them should they beat hosts CA
Bizertin away in Tunisia on Sunday.
Bizertin and FUS are tied on five
points heading into their
penultimate Group B match
